Super Bowl Time

What you should know about Super Bowl XLVIII

Who’s playing the game:

The Denver Broncos (Home Team, W15 – L3) verses The Seattle Seahawks (Away Team, W15 – L3) for the ever-coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Peyton Manning is the quarterback for the Broncos and has enjoyed a record-breaking year. He has already been to the Super Bowl twice, snatching a victory while playing for the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. The Broncos’ regular season was one of the best in NFL history in terms of scoring records. Head coach John Fox was sidelined for four games this season while undergoing heart surgery. The Broncos are the favorite to win.
Richard ShermanThe Seattle Seahawks may be viewed as the underdog, but their defense has been completely shutting down opposing offenses all season long. Love him or hate him, the ever-boisterous Richard Sherman is one of their star defenders (you may recognize him from his infamous postgame interview with sideline reporter Erin Andrews where he yelled about being the best after defeating the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game two weeks back). Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is only in his second season in the NFL, yet still shows the poise to carry the young team onward to victory. It is the first time since Super Bowl XLIV, and just the second time in the past 20 seasons in which the No. 1 seeds from each conference will meet to decide the championship

When is it:

Sunday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m. The game airs on FOX or can be streamed online at FOX Sports Go.

Where is it?

The Super Bowl is being played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. It’s an open-air stadium, which means that the weather could severely impact the game. (The Super Bowl is traditionally played in warm weather regions or indoors, but the NFL is experimenting with an outdoor game.) According to the National Weather Service, game time temperatures should be in the low 30s with a wind chill that will make it feel like 20 degrees. This will be the first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather environment and the first to be played outdoors on artificial turf since Super Bowl X. It’s also the first in which two U.S. states (New York and New Jersey) will share hosting duties.

EC30SUPERBOWL_6_WEBWhy are people calling this game the “Marijuana Bowl,” or “Weed Bowl?”

Washington and Colorado are the only two states that have legalized recreational marijuana and they both made it to the Super Bowl. Coincidence?
“I’m staying home and will be watching the Super Bowl while I light up my own Super Bowl,” well-known stoner and marijuana advocate Tommy Chong, of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong, wrote on his Facebook page.
A nightclub DJ and a few buddies were sitting at a sports bar in Denver, joking about how funny it would be if the Seahawks and Broncos made it to Super Bowl XLVIII. They decided register the Internet domain stonerbowl.org before the Seahawks and Broncos won their conference championships. Smart move, stoners. They’re are using the site to sell T-shirts and hats celebrating the coincidence. One shirt features the Vince Lombardi Trophy turned into a bong and spoof of the league’s logo, with the letters THC replacing NFL.

Week 2: Manning joins Brett Favre and Dan Marino as the only players in NFL history to throw for more than 60,000 yards.
Week 4: Manning leads Broncos to 52 points, a franchise record.
Week 5: Manning throws his first interception. He had 20 TDs to that point.
Week 8: Manning throws 3 interceptions, putting the Broncos down big, but scores 38 unanswered points to beat Washington.
Week 11: Manning goes 27-17 during the dissection of the then-undefeated Chiefs.
Week 13: Manning throws five TDs (four to Eric Decker), breaking Denver’s franchise record of 37 TD passes.
Week 16: Manning breaks Tom Brady’s NFL record with his 51st touchdown pass.

Sounds great! I would like to buy a commercial for my business. How much would it cost me?

Fox has set the sales rate for a 30-second advertisement at $4 million.

What’s the line?:

Spread: Broncos -2.5, per Vegas Insider
Over/Under: 47, per CBS Sports

What does Madden Predict?:

EA Sports have run through their usual video-game prediction using Madden NFL 25. The result: they say the Broncos will win and Peyton Manning will be the MVP, but they also say it will be a closely contested game that will require overtime to decided the 31-28 victor.

EC30SUPERBOWL_4_WEBWho is performing at the halftime show?

Bruno Mars will be joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show. Red Hot Chili Peppers will be the first rock band to play a show in four years, since The Who performed a greatest hits medley in 2010 which ended an impressive rock streak that included performances by Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bruce Springsteen. The last three, ahem, performances included Black Eyed Peas, Madonna and a short-lived Destiny’s Child reunion packaged with a whole lotta Beyonce.

What is the Puppy Bowl?:

The Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl is real and actually features several local puppies from Friends of Pep Border Collie Rescue in Gouldsboro. The game isn’t much of a competition — more of a bunch of wobble-legged fuzzballs falling over each other. If cats are more your speed, Hallmark Channel is having a Kitten Bowl.
